horizontal tension cables.

Attractive and secure railings are created with horizontal tension cables. The transparency and strength of the cables provide an open, but protected space. Especially for railings in public areas, cable railing infill is a sustainable and cost effective solution for creating a safe environment.

We are proud to offer stainless steel cable products manufactured at our production facility in Woodridge, IL that conform to domestic content and “Made in USA” requirements.

frequent situations.

Stainless steel tension cables with a diameter of 6 or 8 mm are often used in railings. These cables are tensioned horizontally between the posts. The length of the cables is unlimited. The cables are extended and tensioned by means of cable tensioners.

The height of the railing is at least one meter. The horizontal cables are usually stretched one above the other. The mutual distance should usually not exceed 10 cm. The number of stainless steel tension cables depends on the requirements for use.

The center to center distance of the posts varies per design, however a 4' distance is commonly recommended. A handrail is needed on top of the posts to make the structure rigid.

material
properties.

The stainless steel tension cables are made of AISI316 (also known as 1.4401 or A4 quality). We can guarantee this quality 100% through European certificates. For this application, this steel quality is technically the best solution for price and delivery time. Note that there are situations where stainless steel can rust. This has to do with environmental factors.

mounting options.

The stainless steel tension cables have terminals at the ends to be able to attach to the posts. The terminals are also used to tension the cable. For lengths longer than 15 meters, a tensioner can be used to tighten the cable. There is no standard connection to the posts, but a wire or clevis terminal is often used. The terminals are pre-attached to the cables in our factory. It is therefore important to provide the exact dimensions and the desired cable composition.

special projects.

It is also possible to use the tension cables vertically or diagonally. This creates a playful balustrade railing. Such designs do require the necessary preparation. Due to the flexibility of the cables, it is important to make drawings as detailed as possible. Contact us for assistance with special railing applications.

points of attention forces.

The cable is mounted with a certain pretension. The required pre-tension is determined by the diameter and type of cable, but also by the center to center distance of the posts and the desired sag. Usually, not much pre-tension is required to tighten the cable. If the cable has the right length, it can be tightened by hand (or a simple wrench).

If a person stands on the cable (point load), the cable will by definition start to sag. A tensile force is created in the cable, which is transferred to the end posts. The magnitude of that force can be as much as ten times the weight of the person. It is therefore important to ensure the end posts have the correct rigidity. Adding a handrail to the top is usually sufficient.

We are happy to help you with the detailing of the posts so that the stainless steel tension cables are neatly and properly installed.

mounting of tension cables.

Installation of tension cables is fairly simple. When ordering, you specify the position numbers, which will appear on the labels of the cables. It is important that the cables have the correct dimensions and that the holes and eyes in the balustrades match the dimensions of the terminals. We can always help you with the preparation and measurement of such details. Please contact us.
